Film Critics Snicker at the Idea of Evil

film criticsOne of the sites I read daily is which features current religion articles from all over. Today I noticed a piece about the movie that is opening tomorrow called, The Conjuring. It’s a horror movie about the haunting of a house, and it’s based on a real life situation.

This article today by Nicholas G. Hahn is entitled The Devil in My Theater.  He describes movie critics screening the film as snickering their way through the movie which was anything but funny. It is astonishing that today, when you see reports of unspeakable horror in the news almost daily, the idea of real evil and Satan is laughed at. Where do scoffers think the inspiration for these horrific crimes comes from? Giggle on, those who believe in nothing but their own bellies, but as it has been said, one of the easiest tricks the devil ever pulled was to convince people (movie critics and otherwise) that he didn’t exist.

Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. ~ I Peter 5:8

Scoffers abound. However, do an online search sometime for the account of the ELCA pastor who counseled the Wichita area’s BTK serial killer (who was the president of an ELCA congregation). The pastor states that he was skeptical of the notion of demonic possession, especially in this day and age, until he has his talks with the killer. The killer describes to his pastor how something he calls ” Factor X ” takes over when he commits BTK (bind, torture, kill). Since then, the pastor doesn’t doubt demon possession.

I sat across the table from someone and knew I was in the presence of evil. It doesn’t always show up in ways like in the movies. (Although sometimes it does.) Wherever pride stalks, wherever pride destroys, wherever lies reign, wherever hatred is nurtured and malice is fostered, there is where the enemy dwells. I am just grateful that greater is He who is in us than he that is in the world, as it is written. Let the scoffers scoff. We see the evidence all around us of what evil does. The enemy comes to steal, kill and destroy, but Jesus Christ came that we could have life and not just life, but abundant life. All glory to His name.
