Our local airport sponsors an air show each August, and in that we only live 2 miles away, we get to watch from our house. Hearing the thunder of air power overhead yesterday afternoon, Emmy, Will, Jonathan and I went out on the back deck to sit and watch.
Formation after formation went by, seeming almost close enough to reach up and touch. The noise was deafening, and Emmy watched my face intently to see if there was any reason for alarm. She saw me smiling and cheering the planes on, so she figured all was well. She did, however, come running over to me with each successive fly-over just to be certain.
Some of the warbirds were painted in brilliant colors like red and yellow and blue. Juxtaposed against the deep blue sky, it was a thrilling sight as wave after wave flew over from different directions.
Some planes had just flown over and my eyes were still turned skyward when something a little closer to earth caught my eye. There was a quick little flash of stunning yellow wings with black markings that flew all the way across our yard and into the trees. It was yet another splash of color against the blue sky. But this time, the designer was God himself. It appeared to be an Eastern Tiger Swallowtail butterfly that made its appearance. It was as if the butterfly knew there was an air show on and decided to add its beauty and effortless prowess just at the right moment.
I had to smile. We as humans think we are advanced and clever with all our technological inventions and power. And there is something to be said for the human ingenuity that can put earthbound humans into the air.
But I was reminded yesterday that everything we know is still derived knowledge from a higher Source. The Creator of that Eastern Tiger Swallowtail invented flight long before man ever thought of it. The lovely air show yesterday was capped by the appearance of that butterfly in flight on a late summer afternoon. It made me praise the Designer once more for His greatness.
