Ingrid,
Your wonderful post reminds me I need to send you this belated 'thank you' for your previous recommendation of the illustrated Bible story book from Concordia Publishing.
I went to their website and purchased two; one each for my latest grand-nephew and grand-niece. This book reminds me of the one my late mother had given me when I was a child five decades ago (phew, I'm OLD - LOL)
Hopefully both of these babies will be read these stories as they grow up. I am praying that they will impact their parents as well.

I had books quite early on as well. I'm realizing now what a blessing that is.

This is quite a frightening trend. How will the Gospel be preached to these young people, either now or when they grow up? How will the content of Divine Truth be communicated? What will happen to books? What place will there be for a good translation of the Bible, and the timeless Truth preached thereby by the early fathers, reformers, puritans, etc?

But the God Who gave us His Word and kept it for us, and draws His elect to believe it, He is still Sovereign in all of life. He will open their eyes to His Word, and His Word to their eyes and they'll read.

Hi Valerie, Salutations from the brownie making world! I didn't actually read much text to them until they were about a year, and then just simple books obviously, but hearing the language at any age and being snuggled close to Mom is advantageous, I would think. It couldn't possibly hurt, and I know the "experts" all say it's never too early. I just took my cues from the babes as to when they were ready for longer stories. Mostly, they love the bright colorful pictures as infants. The little 13-month-old I sit for is very attentive and loves to look at pictures in books and will sit still for it. Other children are very physically active and won't slow down for much of it, so it varies child to child as well. Having books in their lives early on is the main thing, and modeling reading for them also. Em would have books upside down imitating me while sitting next to me in bed. Surrounded by books and having good experiences early can help make readers later. (Not always, but often!)

Thank you for this great post! I have a 4-month old and was wondering how old your babies were when you started reading to them? I've read to him a few times now, and really enjoy the time with him. I will have to look into the Edith series, sounds adorable. I remember one time on CrossTalk that you mentioned that you'd "rather be home making brownies." So glad that little Emily is here and that you have that chance to make your brownies. :)
