I don't decorate for Thanksgiving and I long ago discovered the joys of cooking in bags. Even the crockpot gets a liner, lol. It'll just be the three of us this year and I still don't know if my husband will be working that day (military). I need to start a list of things I'm grateful for this year. Waiting until the last minute doesn't make it as rewarding as keeping a list going until Thanksgiving day.

Ah Marilyn, it all sounds so easy. But there's the shopping, the table setting, the house cleaning, the making of the casseroles, the making of the dressing and all the onion and celery chopping, the making of the bread or rolls. the making of the pies--the hardest part is coordinating the cooking so that nothing is limp or cold and having enough room in the oven to bake it all at the right time, plus keeping the stuff on the stove from burning. Wish I had your organizational talent, but I DON'T. Sob. Then in a few weeks, it's Christmas and we have to do it all over again!

I don't mean to sound like pollyanna but....I think Thanksgiving is one of the easiest meals to do. I am shocked at and really re-thinking what you all are saying. I do a piece a day. Noodles and Rolls-Tuesday, mash potatoes-the kind you put together and bake -and green bean casserole Wednesday. My mom helps with stuffing and pies. Cranberry sauce-the junky gelled type--out of a can. Turkey in the oven- I will admit-I do not like cleaning inside parts out of the carcass and just throw it all away-yuck. When the bird is done, I bake the casseroles. Put out the butter for the rolls and that is called dinner. Once a year is enough for the delicious but heavy meal. Two weeks, can't wait.

I can surely relate from year's past. It can be exhausting, but considering the despicable state of our nation, I think we should do everything possible to celebrate Thanksgiving. It was a holiday that was set aside for thanksgiving to God. We, as Christians, should do everything we can to bring attention to why we celebrate it and take it seriously. Our children need some traditions and memories of family to carry on. We are falling apart as a nation. Let us stand up and thank God for this holiday. It seems as if it is the only holiday that the atheists haven't tried to obliterate. It is a time for us to share Christ with others and to give them our reasons for thanksgiving. It really doesn't matter what we eat--it does matter if we don't take government-sponsored holidays and use them to glorify God.

I miss the big Thanksgiving dinners my mom and grandmothers made. It was always a lot of work and I helped out as much as I could but I think it really was a pleasure for them to prepare these meals. They were pleased when we said it was good and the women's fellowship during the kitchen clean up when we got together to catch up on things as we washed and dried the dishes was always sweet. I can honestly say I miss the preparation and the clean up because both were pleasant.

I've tried eating out on Thanksgiving but the same intimate family fellowship was not there even if we were all at the same table. Not cooking the dinner at home also means we miss out on the pleasure of sneaking tidbits all through the day!

Just help out as much as you can. My mom says she likes all of us there around her table. She enjoys the stories we share while we all do the dishes. (I have to confess I do too) I know it is work. My mom and dad went to my sister's homes in different states last year for both Christmas and Thanksgiving. So I decided to do both meals myself for other family and friends. It was work. But what I missed the most last year was my sister's and my mom standing the kitchen with me preparing and cleaning up. We always end up with one new funny adventure by the time the day is over. I think God gives us these great holidays to remember the abundance and blessings He grants us. My biggest blessing is my family.

I always think I'm going to "scale down" Thanksgiving, but I never do! My husband always gets a turkey from his employer so we have to make it! However this year I may scale down a bit. I had gallbladder surgery (with complications) recently. I'm trying very hard to talk myself into not doing "all the trimmings" - just the basics. Your idea of the sturdy paper plates sounds great but I don't thnk it will fly with my husband and family - just too casual. The one thing that always bugs me about this type of event are the specialized things people need (so and so can only drink diet pop, etc.). I've decided if anyone has food restrictions they have to supply that item, etc. - I simply can't be accountable!

I hear ya Ingrid. My mom would'nt think of paper plates, or doing anything but the traditional way. I feel so bad for her, with all of us 7 kids at home, plus all of our families, she spends her whole time cleaning and cooking. By the time she is done, she has to think of the next meal. I have tried to lessen the load for my mom by suggesting that we all go out for a nice Thanksgiving meal. Yikes you should have seen everyones faces! You would have thought I grew a second head on my shoulders by the reaction I got. I think the important part is being together and being thankful, its not what you eat. Well, since my ideas aren't floating, I just try and help out by bringing a side, or doing the extra dishes or whatever so that my mom can rest.

I can tell she is getting older though. She used to bake cookies and special meals when we came and now we are seeing less of that. Thats alright. Now, I take my turn and bring the sweets to her.

She sure does bake a mean apple pie though, I won't let her skip that tradition! he he he!

Have a good day, oh and if I dont get to comment before, Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!!

That's ok, Ingrid.
If I were in your shoes, I'd probably skip the cooking altogether. I can't say I've had a Mexican style Thanksgiving dinner, but I'd be willing to give it a try. I remember one Thanksgiving my wife and I were just married and unable to travel home, so we went to Cracker Barrel for an unusually ill-tasting and poorly served meal - the only time I've ever had a bad meal there. I'm sure our waiter got himself fired that evening ;) But, you're right, compared to many folks, we have an overabundance of blessings - food being the least of our worries.
We continue to pray along with you for all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 1 Tim. 2:1-2
