Legislator Files Lawsuit Against…God?
September 18, 2007 by Ingrid Schlueter
“Nebraska Democratic State Senator Ernie Chambers has decided to go straight to the top in an effort to stop natural disasters from befalling the world.
Chambers filed a lawsuit against God in Douglas County Court Friday afternoon, KPTM Fox 42 reported.” Here’s the story. I think the legislator needs to read God’s response to Job beginning in chapter 38 of that book.
This is mostly a political stunt to fight off other senators’ legislation restricting the freedom to bring any kind of lawsuit to court, but if upheld by the court, what does that say about the court’s belief in God’s existence? Perhaps nothing, but I wonder if atheists consider the impact of such a legal precedent?
Perhaps this legislator needs to do a little more research before filing his lawsuit. Man has learned how to control the weather. Use Google to lookup “weather warfare” and be amazed.
If anything, the legislator is making the case for the frivolous lawsuit restriction legislation. I feel sorry for judges who have to deal with these kinds of legal filings. As for the atheists, this certainly is an acknowledgment that God is real!
I think it’s fine if this man files a lawsuit against God - maybe it will make people think twice about all the nonsensical lawsuits that have been filed in the past 30 years (possibly too many lawyers with not enough to do?)
I can’t wait to see where this goes.
I am from Nebraska and Mr. Chambers has always done the extreme for shock purposes. This is just another one of his antics. We mostly ignore him here in Nebraska.
What’s next? Are they going to serve God with a re-straining order?
How can you file a law suite aganist someone that the goverment basically says doesn’t exist?
Since God can’t be in anything the goverment does or even the mention of him how can they sue him???
Guess it’s like everything these days - they want it both ways.
The remarkable thing here is that this not only acknowledges that God is real enough to be sued but that He’s HERE on the earth to be sued (i.e. in the county that the suit is filed). In order for a lawsuit to truly be viable there has to be a tangible address for BOTH parties.
This man is showing more sense than all the religions put together. He is saying that God is here on the earth to even be sued.
I concur, this was an elaborate political stunt for the dramatics and shock value but it does have some interesting ramifications.
Didn’t I see this same foolishness on an episode of Touched by an Angel (before I knew enough not to watch the show). Yes, yes I did! Only on the show the lawsuit was over a drought. This is nonsense. I read the article, I see what the intent was… Ingrid, I agree with you that there is no fear of God any longer. May the Lord have mercy on us.
